Cash is Mandatory (Egyptian Pounds Only)
You must have 60 US Dollar in cash per person for the border fee.
Where to get it: Exchange your NIS at a licensed currency exchange (Change) in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, or at the airport before you head south.
Warning: Egyptian ATMs or credit cards; they often fail. Being even slightly short on cash will result in significant delays.
Travel Light & On Foot
The entire crossing involves walking between terminals in outdoor areas.
Constraint: Pack light (max 20kg/44lbs). You will be wheeling your own luggage across the border.
Pro Tip: Wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for the desert heat.
Restricted Gear (No Drones)
Egyptian security is extremely strict about electronics.
Strictly Forbidden: Drones and professional-grade camera lenses. If found, they will be confiscated.
Electronics: Your laptop and phone are fine, but keep them accessible for inspection.
Be Direct About Your Destination
When asked by Egyptian officers, clearly state where you are going (Sharm, Cairo, or Dahab).
Consistency is Key: Your answer must match the driver’s declaration. Authorities verify this at multiple military checkpoints along the road.
Prepare for the Desert Environment
The border area is exposed to sun and high winds.
Hydration: Liquids are allowed. Keep a bottle of water with you at all times.
Loose Items: Secure your hat, sunglasses, and head coverings (Kippahs/Scarves) as desert gusts can be very strong.
